19-Year-Old Air Force Academy Cadet Tragically Passes Away in Dorm

When 19-year-old Avery Koonce left her hometown of Tyler, Texas, for the U.S. Air Force Academy, she carried the hopes of everyone who knew her. A star sprinter and honor student, she was living her dream — training to serve, competing at the highest level, and inspiring others through her drive and discipline. But in early September 2024, tragedy struck. Avery was found unresponsive in her dorm room at the Academy in Colorado Springs — a loss that left her family, friends, and teammates heartbroken.

An autopsy later revealed the heartbreaking cause: Paeniclostridium sordellii sepsis, a rare bacterial infection that developed as a complication of a respiratory illness. In simpler terms, Avery’s viral pneumonia became severe, overwhelming her body.

Forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden, who reviewed the case, explained, “She essentially died from untreated pneumonia. It’s a tragedy because it was entirely preventable with timely medical care.”

This aggressive bacterium can spread rapidly when the immune system is weakened — turning a manageable illness into a fatal one within hours. Experts stress that early treatment with antibiotics and medical monitoring could have saved her life.

Avery wasn’t just any student. She was a Texas track star, running the 100 meters in 12.12 seconds and the 200 meters in 25.67. Her determination earned her a spot on the Academy’s track team, where she continued to shine as both an athlete and a scholar.
