Fatal Accident on Outskirts Leaves 19 People Dead

A horrific accident on the Mexico–Querétaro Highway in the State of Mexico has claimed at least 19 lives and left multiple others injured after a trailer lost control and slammed into several vehicles. The crash happened Wednesday morning, November 20, near kilometer 59 in Huehuetoca—a stretch notorious for heavy traffic and dangerous descents.

According to the State of Mexico’s Civil Protection authorities, the fully loaded trailer, carrying construction materials, failed to brake as traffic slowed. It barreled into multiple cars before jackknifing, blocking all three northbound lanes. The collision involved at least eight other vehicles, including cars, a pickup truck, and a small commuter bus.

Witnesses described chaos. “It sounded like an explosion,” one driver said. “Debris everywhere, people screaming, smoke rising from the wreckage.” Emergency crews rushed from Huehuetoca and neighboring towns, battling fires and helping victims trapped in twisted metal. Helicopters airlifted the most critical patients to nearby hospitals.

Authorities confirmed 19 people died instantly, while at least 13 others suffered injuries ranging from fractures to severe burns. Victims included families traveling for the holiday weekend and commuters heading to Mexico City.

The trailer driver survived and was detained at the scene. Investigators are examining whether brake failure, excessive speed, or poor maintenance caused the disaster. “We will check the trailer’s brake system and maintenance logs,” said a State Attorney General official.
