Lifestyle The scent of lemon cleaner hung in the air as I wiped down the kitchen counters, the soft hum of the dishwasher filling the silence. Cleaning wasn’t how I imagined spending my morning, but it gave me time to think. I had just tossed the sponge into the sink when the doorbell rang.
At the door stood a sharply dressed man with a bright smile, holding a sleek phone and a leather briefcase. He looked like someone from a business magazine.“Hello!” he said warmly. “I’m looking for Mr. Lambert. You must be the cleaning lady—Liliya, right? I’m his business partner, David. Nice to meet you.”
Before I could respond, he continued, “Mrs. Lambert told me all about you. Even showed me your picture.”
“Mrs. Lambert?” I asked, keeping my tone even.
“Yes, Greg and his wife. Such a great team,” he chuckled.
His words stopped me cold. Greg had a wife… who wasn’t me? I studied his face, wondering what story he believed. But instead of correcting him, I simply smiled and said, “Please, come in.”He settled onto the couch like he belonged there. “They always look so happy together,” he said, scrolling through his phone. “Here, let me show you.”
I took the phone—and there she was. My sister Allison, smiling beside Greg, my husband. My heart thudded, but I kept my face composed.David chatted on, unaware. “Funny thing—Greg never mentioned he was married until I ran into them. He introduced her right there on the street.”
I forced a smile. “You must have a lot of photos.”
“Oh, tons. She even showed me a picture of you once. Said you were their cleaning lady.”
I stepped into the kitchen for a moment to collect myself. Then I returned with a cup of coffee for him. Calmly, I said, “David, we need to talk.”
His expression shifted. “About what?”
“Look at the photo on the mantel.”
He walked over and picked it up. A pause. Then realization. “This is you,” he said softly.
“Yes. And that man beside me is my husband. Greg Lambert.”

“You believed a story that wasn’t true,” I said gently.
