Malia and Sasha Obama Enjoy a Night Out With Drake in Los Angeles

Malia and Sasha Obama, the daughters of former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, are continuing to carve out their own lives away from the White House spotlight. Recently, the sisters were seen enjoying a night out in Los Angeles at a popular Hollywood venue where Canadian rapper Drake was also present.

The sighting drew attention online, not only because of Drake’s star power, but because the former first daughters—now adults—have largely stayed private while building independent lives.

Growing up in the public eye

Malia and Sasha spent much of their childhood under intense public scrutiny while living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue from 2009 to 2017. Michelle Obama has spoken openly about how challenging it was to raise children in such an environment, emphasizing the importance of helping them develop confidence and independence despite constant attention.

“They were watched,” Michelle Obama said on the Moments That Make Us podcast with Melinda French Gates. “They had to learn how to balance the unwanted attention, but do it politely… and still build their own lives.”

She added that even with the privileges of the White House, she and Barack Obama raised their daughters with the understanding that they would eventually need to manage life on their own.

Malia’s path in film and television

Born on July 4, 1998, Malia Obama has shown a clear interest in storytelling and entertainment. After graduating high school in 2016, she took a gap year before enrolling at Harvard University, where she graduated in 2021.

During her time away from school, Malia gained hands-on experience in the entertainment industry, working as a production assistant on CBS’s Extant and later as a writer on the Amazon series Swarm. In 2024, she made her directorial debut at the Sundance Film Festival with Heart, a short film she wrote and directed under the name Malia Ann.
