Health What to Know About Sleep Position
We often think about sleep in terms of how many hours we get each night.
But there is another factor worth considering: how you sleep.
Your sleeping position can affect comfort, breathing, joint pressure, and symptoms such as acid reflux. However, there is no single position that is perfect for everyone.
For some people, sleeping on the left side may offer certain benefits. For others, a different position may feel more comfortable.
One reason the left side is often discussed is its possible connection with acid reflux.
Because of the way the stomach and esophagus are positioned, some people with nighttime reflux find that lying on their left side may reduce symptoms compared with lying on their right side.
That doesn't mean everyone needs to sleep on the left.
If you rarely experience reflux and sleep comfortably in another position, there may be no reason to force yourself to change.
Sleep position doesn't determine how well your digestive system works, but body position can influence certain digestive symptoms.
People who experience heartburn at night sometimes find side sleeping—particularly on the left—more comfortable.
Other factors can matter as well, including meal timing, the size of evening meals, individual food triggers, and whether someone has an underlying digestive condition.
If frequent heartburn is interfering with sleep, it's better to discuss it with a healthcare professional rather than relying solely on a change in sleeping position.
Side sleeping can also be comfortable for people who prefer having their body supported along its length.
A pillow between the knees may help some sleepers maintain a more comfortable position and reduce pressure around the hips or lower back.
Pillow height matters too. A pillow that keeps the head and neck reasonably aligned can make side sleeping more comfortable.
There is no universal pillow setup, so small adjustments may be necessary.
Claims that sleeping exclusively on the left side dramatically improves circulation or “cleanses” the body should be treated cautiously.
Your cardiovascular and lymphatic systems continue functioning while you sleep regardless of whether you are on your left side, right side, back, or stomach.
