Unexplained bruises can be surprising, especially when they appear without any obvious injury. Although bruising is often harmless, changes in the size, frequency, or location of bruises can sometimes be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
A bruise develops when small blood vessels beneath the skin are damaged, allowing blood to collect in surrounding tissue. The area may initially appear red, purple, or blue before gradually changing color as the body breaks down and reabsorbs the blood.
