For 64-year-old Eleanor, the unusually high electricity bill was impossible to ignore.
She was a widow, lived alone, and followed much the same routine every month. Her electricity usage was remarkably consistent, so when a bill suddenly arrived at nearly twice its normal amount, she immediately knew something had changed.
She just didn’t know what.
Until one sleepless night, she heard a noise outside.
A Strange Discovery
Eleanor looked through the window and noticed something unusual beside her driveway.
Her neighbor, Monica, had parked a Tesla near the property.
Even more surprising, a charging cable was connected to Eleanor’s outdoor garage outlet.
Eleanor realized that the additional electricity wasn’t coming from anything inside her home.
Someone else was using it.
And Monica apparently didn’t think she was doing anything wrong.
When Eleanor confronted her, Monica offered an explanation that made the situation even more troubling.
She argued that Eleanor lived alone and was retired, while Monica had three children. In her view, Eleanor didn’t need as much electricity and therefore shouldn’t object to sharing the outlet.
The extra expense, Monica suggested, was insignificant.
To Eleanor, it wasn’t about the amount of money.
It was about permission.
It Wasn’t the First Boundary Monica Had Crossed
Eleanor began thinking about other incidents.
Monica had previously borrowed Eleanor’s lawn mower without asking. She had also taken a garden gnome from Eleanor’s property because she thought it looked better in her own yard.
Eleanor had repeatedly let those incidents go.
She had always considered herself someone who preferred peace over confrontation.
But eventually, she realized that avoiding conflict wasn’t necessarily the same thing as having peace.
The Tesla charging incident changed that.
