Inside were my rent checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every single one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Neatly stacked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thirty-six envelopes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thirty-six checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not one had been deposited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I stared at them, unable to speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“This…” I whispered. “This is almost twenty-nine thousand dollars.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I know.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Why?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He motioned toward the two old lawn chairs on his porch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Sit.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I sat down, still clutching the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a long time, neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finally, he sighed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“My daughter was about your age when she got divorced.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“She had a little boy.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He smiled sadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“She tried so hard to make everything work.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His eyes drifted toward the old oak tree in the yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“She worked two jobs.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Skipped meals.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Worried about every dollar.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Never asked anyone for help.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My throat tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“What happened to her?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Cancer.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The word landed like a stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We lost her twelve years ago.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I’m so sorry.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He nodded slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“After she died, I promised myself something.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“What?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“If I ever met another young parent trying as hard as she did… I’d help.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I looked down at the checks again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“But why didn’t you tell me?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Because pride is a fragile thing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
