He was texting less. Laughing less. When we talked, his answers became shorter, and the easy excitement I remembered seemed to be fading. I blamed the distance, the upheaval of divorce, and the difficult adjustment that came with everything changing at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then the school called.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His grades were slipping. Teachers had noticed that he seemed distracted and unusually withdrawn. Hearing those words changed the way I looked at everything that had happened over the previous few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When he finally climbed into the passenger seat, he barely spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I didn’t push him immediately. I simply sat beside him and gave him room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We brought him home and began rebuilding our routine one ordinary day at a time. We shared meals. We established predictable schedules. We made space for honest conversations without demanding that he explain everything perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Professional support became part of that process too. Therapy gave him a place where his feelings didn’t have to be edited to protect anyone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Slowly, the changes became visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The quiet conversations became longer. His curiosity returned. There were more jokes at the dinner table. He started talking about school again, making plans, and allowing himself to think about the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Looking back, I realized how easy it can be to mistake silence for independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes a young person isn’t asking for less attention. They simply don’t know how to ask for more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Love isn’t always about giving someone space and hoping they’ll find their way through a difficult season alone. Sometimes love means noticing the changes, asking uncomfortable questions, creating safety, and stepping closer when something doesn’t feel right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Children should never have to carry adult problems by themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If a young person in your life seems unusually withdrawn, overwhelmed, or different from their usual self, don’t assume it’s simply a phase. Start with a conversation. Listen carefully. And when necessary, bring in a trusted adult or qualified professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
