It was late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I was exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All I wanted was to climb into bed, pull the blanket over my head, and forget about the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then I lifted the edge of the duvet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Something pale and strangely shaped was lying directly where my head was supposed to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thin, delicate strands stretched across the fabric in every direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For one exhausted second, my brain jumped to the worst possible conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What on earth was that?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The room was dark enough that I couldn’t make out the details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The strange shape looked almost alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those thin extensions resembled tiny legs, and suddenly every horror story I’d ever heard seemed to be playing inside my head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Was it some bizarre insect?<\/p>\n\n\n\n A spider?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something that had somehow found its way into my bedroom?<\/p>\n\n\n\n I didn’t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And I definitely wasn’t interested in finding out by touching it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So I stood there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Staring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The object didn’t move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That should have been reassuring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Somehow, it wasn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Eventually, I realized I couldn’t spend the entire night standing in the doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I took a cautious step toward the bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, I reached over and switched on the brightest light in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The mystery immediately looked less terrifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But I still couldn’t tell exactly what I was seeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So I grabbed my phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If I couldn’t figure it out with my eyes, maybe the camera could help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I leaned closer, zoomed in, and took several photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then I stared at the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And that’s when the mystery began to unravel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I looked again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those strange \u201clegs\u201d weren’t moving because they weren’t legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There was no creature hiding underneath my blanket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No mysterious spider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No strange parasite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No midnight infestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was a seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Somehow, a tiny seed had ended up beneath the duvet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And under the right combination of warmth and moisture, it had started to sprout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those creepy-looking strands weren’t legs at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They were young roots<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The little seed had apparently found a surprisingly cozy place to begin growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Unfortunately for the seed, that place happened to be my bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Keep reading…<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n The transformation in my mood was immediate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A few seconds earlier, I’d been imagining the worst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now I was staring at one of the smallest examples of nature quietly doing what nature does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The strange pale roots had been reaching outward, searching for moisture and space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Under the dim bedroom lighting, they had looked genuinely unsettling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Under a bright light and a phone camera, the explanation became obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I started laughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not because anything frightening had happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But because I’d allowed a harmless sprouting seed to turn my exhausted brain into a full horror-movie director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are plenty of ordinary possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It could have been carried inside on clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It might have fallen from a plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It could have arrived with dirt or another object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The exact explanation wasn’t nearly as interesting as what happened afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The seed found warmth and moisture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And instead of waiting for a garden, it simply started growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Right there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On my bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seeds can be remarkably persistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Given suitable moisture, warmth, and the right conditions, some seeds can begin germinating surprisingly quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The first structures to emerge are roots, which grow downward and outward in search of water and nutrients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the wrong place, those delicate roots can look almost alien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But they’re simply part of the earliest stage of a plant’s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What looked like something from a nightmare was actually something much more ordinary\u2014and much more fascinating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I carefully removed the little sprout from the bed and placed it into some soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then I looked at the mattress one more time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nothing else was hiding there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No mysterious creature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No infestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just one incredibly determined seed that had apparently decided my bedroom was the perfect place to start its life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I finally climbed into bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And this time, I wasn’t afraid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I was mostly amused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because sometimes the scariest thing in the room isn’t what’s actually there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It’s what your tired imagination convinces you is there.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n And on that particular night, my \u201cbedroom monster\u201d turned out to be nothing more than a tiny piece of nature trying to grow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" It was late.
