Try looking at the image again, but this time don’t concentrate only on the ship. Slowly scan the entire picture—including the smoke, clouds, coastline, and smaller details.
Why is it so difficult to see?
Our brains are remarkably good at recognizing familiar patterns, but they’re also influenced by expectations. When we’re told we’re looking at a ship at sea, we tend to interpret shapes according to that setting.
A strange outline may therefore look like part of the ship, a cloud, or another object instead of an animal.
This is similar to the experience of seeing faces in clouds or other everyday objects. Once someone points out the hidden image, it can suddenly become much easier to recognize.
Give yourself a challenge
Before looking for the answer in the comments, give yourself 30 seconds.
Start at the top of the picture and work your way down. Examine the clouds, smoke, lighthouse, rocks, ship and water carefully. Don’t assume the dog will look like a normal dog—it may be cleverly incorporated into another part of the illustration.
