Look at the Picture Differently
Most people naturally search for a small human figure when they’re told that someone is hidden in an image. That’s exactly what makes this illusion so effective.
Instead of looking for a tiny person, try stepping back and studying the entire composition. Look at the outlines of the rocks, the darker areas, the spaces between objects, and the way different shapes connect.
Eventually, some of those ordinary landscape features begin to resemble something completely different: the face of a man wearing a hat.
Your Brain Is Being Tricked
The illusion works because of something known as figure-ground perception.
Our brains constantly try to separate objects from their surroundings. We decide what belongs to the foreground and what belongs to the background, allowing us to make sense of complicated scenes.
In this illustration, however, the boundaries aren’t as clear as they first appear. A shape that looks like a rock can also become part of a face. A shadow can suddenly look like an eye, while the outline of the landscape forms the brim of a hat.
Your brain essentially has to change the way it organizes the image.
Don’t Fall for the “Young Brain” Claim
You may have seen similar versions of this puzzle claiming that people with “young eyes” or a “young brain” can spot the hidden man immediately.
That’s a fun internet challenge, but spotting the figure isn’t a scientific test of your age or intelligence.
How quickly someone recognizes an optical illusion can depend on attention, familiarity with visual puzzles, image quality, screen size, and even the angle from which they’re looking at it.
So if you didn’t see the man immediately, don’t worry. Your brain isn’t failing you.
Once You See Him, It’s Hard to Unsee
That’s the fascinating part of these illusions.
Before the hidden face becomes clear, you’re simply looking at a landscape. After your brain recognizes the alternative interpretation, the same rocks, shadows, and spaces suddenly seem to rearrange themselves into a completely different image.
Take another look and try not to search for a tiny person. Instead, let your eyes move back and look at the landscape as one large shape.
You might be surprised by what has been hiding in plain sight the entire time.
