Christa Pike’s Execution Stay Tied to Tennessee’s Abuse Reversal

The case of Christa Pike took a dramatic turn this week after a federal appeals court temporarily stopped her scheduled execution, allowing judges additional time to examine a legal challenge centered on Pike’s history of childhood sexual abuse and whether that history was properly considered when she was sentenced to death.

Pike, now 50, was scheduled to be executed in Tennessee on September 30, 2026, for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. The Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a temporary stay only hours before the scheduled execution. ABC News
