A tragic school zone accident in New York has left a family grieving and a community calling for stronger traffic safety measures. A 12-year-old girl died days after she was struck by a vehicle while crossing a busy roadway outside her middle school.
On May 16, 2025, Ashley Bratcher marked what would have been her daughter Aunamarie Mankhen’s 13th birthday with a moving message shared on social media. Alongside the post were two photos — the first picture she ever took of her daughter and the final image Aunamarie captured on the day of the accident.
“You should have been 13 today,” Bratcher wrote. “This was the last photo you took before getting on the bus that morning. I miss you beyond words, and nothing will ever heal the pain of losing you.”
She continued by expressing her longing for one more hug and her belief that they will be reunited again someday.
Fatal Pedestrian Crash Occurred During School Dismissal
The deadly pedestrian accident happened on March 31, 2025, as students were leaving Central Square Middle School. Aunamarie was attempting to cross U.S. Route 11, a high-traffic roadway that runs directly in front of the school, when she was struck by a passing vehicle.
According to New York State Police, the vehicle was driven by 22-year-old Tyler Anthony Hanlon. Troopers arrived at the scene around 2:44 p.m., and Aunamarie was rushed to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse with life-threatening injuries.
Despite emergency medical treatment, she passed away on April 3. Investigators confirmed the driver remained at the scene, cooperated with authorities, and showed no signs of impairment. No criminal charges have been filed as the crash investigation continues.
Loved for Her Energy, Creativity, and Kindness
Family members described Aunamarie as a joyful and expressive child who brought energy wherever she went.
“She was known for her bright personality, her love of music, and her creativity,” the family shared. “She was confident, compassionate, and had a heart that matched her smile.”
To honor her memory, loved ones wore purple — her favorite color — at her funeral. The family also chose to donate her organs, a decision that may save or improve the lives of others.
Safety Concerns Raised Over Busy School Zone
The incident has reignited long-standing concerns about traffic enforcement and pedestrian safety along Route 11.
Susan Bonnet, who runs a nearby business across from the school, said speeding has been an ongoing problem in the area. Speaking to Spectrum News 1, she emphasized the need for slower traffic and stronger safety measures.
“This is a school zone,” Bonnet said. “Children cross here every day, and drivers need to be more aware.”
Bonnet witnessed the crash and remained with Aunamarie until emergency crews arrived, offering comfort during the critical moments following the accident.
“This kind of tragedy changes lives forever,” she said. “It’s something no family should ever have to endure.”
Father Shares Heartbreak Months Later
On Thanksgiving — his first without his daughter — Aunamarie’s father, Paul Mahnken, posted a heartfelt message online.
“I miss you more than I can put into words,” he wrote. “Nothing feels the same without you here. I hope you’re at peace, and I carry you with me every day.”
School District Responds as Investigation Continues
Central Square School District Superintendent Thomas J. Colabufo confirmed that several students witnessed the incident and that counseling services were provided to students and staff affected by the loss.
Authorities say the investigation remains open. No charges have been announced, and law enforcement officials continue to review the circumstances surrounding the school zone collision.
