Trump’s New Warning to the Press Raises Big Questions

Donald Trump’s latest comments about the news media are drawing attention because they moved beyond the usual complaints about coverage and into language that critics see as a warning.

Speaking to reporters this week, Trump objected to what he described as unfair reporting about his handling of a military strike decision involving Iran. Major outlets, including CNN and The New York Times, had covered the episode closely.

Rather than simply disputing the reporting, Trump said, “Changes are coming.” He also said, “The press has been out of control,” adding, “That’s going to change.”

Why the Comments Are Getting Attention

Presidents have long argued with the press. The White House press corps exists, in part, to ask difficult questions of people in power, and presidents from both parties have criticized coverage they considered unfair.
