When a Summer Visit Changed the Rules at Home

I thought the summer would give our family a chance to feel close again. My sixteen-year-old stepson, Jake, was coming to stay with us, and my younger children, Emma and Noah, were thrilled. They remembered him as the older brother who played games with them, listened to their stories, and made them feel special.

But the boy who walked through our door felt distant almost immediately. Jake kept his eyes on his phone, brushed off the kids when they tried to spend time with him, and treated our home as if every rule had disappeared the moment he arrived.

At first, I tried to be patient. Teenagers have moods. They need space. A summer visit can be awkward, especially when families are blended and routines have to be rebuilt. Still, what began as attitude quickly turned into something harder to ignore.

The Problems Started Small, Then Grew

Jake left food, clothes, and trash wherever he happened to be. He stayed loud late at night, ignored simple requests, and acted annoyed when I asked him to clean up after himself. Emma and Noah, who had been so excited to see him, slowly became quieter around him.
