The airport was buzzing with travelers eager to begin their vacations when everything came to a sudden stop.

My nine-year-old daughter, Ellie, opened the small case where she proudly kept her passport. Seconds later, the excitement disappeared from her face.

“It was right here,” she whispered, searching the empty pocket again and again.

We checked every bag, every zipper, every jacket pocket, hoping it had simply been misplaced. But after several frantic minutes, the airline agent gently confirmed what we feared: without a passport, Ellie couldn’t board our international flight.
