Cleaning a child’s bedroom can turn up all kinds of forgotten things: missing socks, old toys, snack wrappers, and the occasional object that makes you stop and look twice. That is exactly what happened during one ordinary afternoon of tidying up.
While cleaning beneath my son’s bed, I noticed something tucked away in the dust. It was pale, slightly curved, and had a darker end. In the dim light under the bed, it looked unfamiliar enough that I did not immediately want to touch it.
At first, I tried to make sense of it from a distance. Was it something natural? A broken piece of a toy? A household item that had changed shape after being ignored for months? The longer I looked, the easier it became to imagine explanations that were far more dramatic than necessary.
