When my ten-year-old son broke his leg while staying with my ex-husband, I was told it was a simple accident.
At least, that’s what my ex-husband wanted me to believe.
Hours later, a charge nurse quietly slipped a note into my hand.
“He’s lying. Check the camera at 3 a.m.”
I had no idea that following her advice would uncover a secret that would change everything.
The Call Every Parent Dreads
I was sitting at my desk finishing a report when my ex-husband’s name appeared on my phone.
Our son, Howard, was staying with him that week, so I answered immediately.
“Hey, so… don’t freak out,” Jasper said.
My heart immediately started racing.
“What happened?”
“Howard broke his leg. He fell off his scooter. It was just a freak accident. I was right there with him. I saw the whole thing.”
I froze.
Howard was ten years old. Energetic, adventurous, and always eager to try something new, but he was still my little boy.
“Is he okay? Where are you?”
“We’re at the ER. He’s fine. Just shaken up.”
I grabbed my purse, told my boss there was an emergency, and drove straight to the hospital.
Something About the Story Didn’t Feel Right
When I reached the emergency room, Howard was lying in a hospital bed with a bright blue cast covering his lower leg.
“Hey, buddy.”
I leaned down and kissed his forehead.
“You scared me.”
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
“You don’t have to apologize. You didn’t do it on purpose.”
Howard looked away.
“Were you doing tricks on your scooter again?” I asked gently. “I’m not mad. I just want to know what happened.”
Before Howard could answer, Jasper interrupted.
“He just lost his balance. No tricks. He slipped on the driveway.”
I looked at my son.
Then at his father.
Howard shifted uncomfortably. He glanced at Jasper, then down at his cast.
Something didn’t feel right.
I didn’t want to start an argument in front of my injured son, so I let the subject go.
For the moment.
I stayed beside Howard’s bed while he drifted in and out of sleep. Jasper sat in the corner, focused on his phone.
Later that evening, a charge nurse came into the room to check Howard’s vital signs.
As she approached the bed, Jasper reached over to adjust Howard’s blanket.
Howard flinched.
It was a tiny movement, but the nurse noticed it.
So did I.
The nurse’s expression changed for just a moment.
When she finished checking Howard, she walked toward the door. As she passed me, she quietly pressed something into my hand.
I waited until she had left the room before unfolding it.
It was a yellow sticky note.
HE’S LYING. CHECK THE CAMERA AT 3 A.M.
My mouth went dry.
The Secret Camera Footage
A few minutes later, I stepped into the hallway and found the nurse near the station.
“What do you mean?” I asked quietly.
She kept her voice low.
