Dark Patches on Your Skin? Here’s What They Could Mean
Sometimes a change in your skin can be easy to dismiss. You might notice a darker, thicker patch around your neck, underarms, or groin and assume it is simply dirt, irritation, or the result of everyday friction.
But if the area does not wash away and feels noticeably thicker or velvety, there could be another explanation: acanthosis nigricans.
This common skin change is not caused by poor hygiene. Instead, it can sometimes be an outward clue that something is happening inside the body, particularly with the way it responds to insulin.
What Is Acanthosis Nigricans?
Acanthosis nigricans typically appears as darker skin that may feel thicker or have a slightly rough, velvety texture. It often develops in skin folds, including the neck, armpits, and groin.
The condition itself is not necessarily dangerous, but it can sometimes be associated with insulin resistance, a situation in which the body has difficulty responding effectively to insulin.
Other factors can also play a role, including family history, hormonal conditions, certain medications, and, much more rarely, underlying medical conditions.
