A dark patch on the back or sides of the neck can be easy to dismiss at first. Maybe it looks like irritation from a collar, a buildup from sweat, or a spot that just needs a better wash. But if the area does not fade with normal cleansing, it may be worth paying closer attention.
One possible cause is a skin condition known as acanthosis nigricans. On its own, it is often not dangerous. However, it can sometimes be linked with underlying health issues, especially problems involving how the body uses insulin.
That does not mean every dark patch on the neck is a sign of diabetes or another serious condition. It does mean that a new, persistent, or changing patch is a reasonable thing to discuss with a healthcare professional.
What Acanthosis Nigricans Can Look Like
Acanthosis nigricans usually causes skin to become darker, thicker, and more velvety than nearby skin. The color can vary depending on a person’s natural skin tone. It may look brown, grayish, or simply noticeably darker than the surrounding area.
