Mayra Gómez Kemp: The Woman Who Changed Television History

Her name deserves to be remembered.

Long before today’s polished game-show stages and celebrity hosts became television staples, Mayra Gómez Kemp stepped into a space that had overwhelmingly belonged to men—and made it her own.

When she became the face of Spain’s legendary Un, dos, tres… responda otra vez in 1982, she wasn’t simply taking over a television program. She was breaking new ground.

RTVE has described Gómez Kemp as the first woman in the world to host a game show, a distinction she herself spoke about with pride. She had hoped her success would open the door for more women to follow, noting that game-show presenting had been an almost exclusively male domain.

The Voice Millions Knew

Born in Havana in 1948, Gómez Kemp built a career that crossed acting, singing, radio, and television before becoming one of Spain’s most recognizable presenters.

Her defining opportunity came in 1982, when Chicho Ibáñez Serrador selected her to host Un, dos, tres, succeeding Kiko Ledgard. She remained at the helm for six consecutive years and presented 168 episodes.

The program became a television institution.

For millions of viewers, her voice, timing, humor, and trademark presence became part of their weekly routine.
