A seasoned veterinarian has sparked conversation online after revealing five popular dog breeds he personally would never own—based on years of hands-on experience in the field.
Dr. Amir Anwary, a veterinarian from South Africa, says that while dogs are among the most beloved pets worldwide, many owners choose breeds based on appearance or trends rather than lifestyle compatibility. According to him, a lack of research often leads to frustrated owners, unhappy dogs, and avoidable health issues.
Here are the five breeds he believes require extra consideration before bringing them home.
Border Collie
Border Collies are widely admired for their intelligence and energy, but Dr. Anwary warns that these traits can become a challenge in everyday households. Originally bred to herd livestock, they thrive on constant mental and physical stimulation.
Without daily structured activity, they can become bored, anxious, and destructive—especially in urban or apartment settings. The breed is also prone to joint conditions such as hip dysplasia and arthritis, which can result in long-term veterinary care.
