FBI Captures Notorious Fugitive in Decade-Old North Carolina Murder Case

The FBI has apprehended one of its most wanted fugitives, ending a nearly decade-long search for justice in North Carolina.

Alejandro Rosales Castillo, 27, had been listed on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted” since 2017 after fleeing the country. He was wanted in connection with the 2016 murder of 23-year-old Sandy Ly Le, a former coworker in Charlotte.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed Castillo’s arrest on Friday in Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico. He is currently in custody as authorities prepare for his extradition to North Carolina to face charges for the murder.

Despite a $250,000 reward and an ongoing manhunt, Castillo managed to live a seemingly normal life while evading capture for years.

Successful Coordination Between U.S. and Mexican Authorities

Director Patel highlighted the operation as a major law enforcement achievement:

“This arrest marks the fifth Ten Most Wanted fugitive captured under this administration and the FBI since last year—more than the total from the previous four years combined. This demonstrates the results that are possible when law enforcement is given the resources and support to carry out its mission. Our teams in Charlotte, Mexico, and federal partners worked tirelessly to bring long-awaited justice to Sandy Ly Le’s family.”

Details of the Crime

Ly Le and Castillo had a brief romantic relationship while working together at a Charlotte restaurant. At the time, Castillo owed Ly Le money. After their breakup, he allegedly failed to repay her and began dating another colleague.

On August 9, 2016, Castillo reportedly lured Ly Le under the guise of repayment. Investigators say she was forced to withdraw $1,000 from an ATM before being driven to a secluded area, where Castillo allegedly shot her. Her body was later discovered in a wooded ravine.

James C. Barnacle Jr., FBI Charlotte Special Agent in Charge, noted:

“For more than nine years, Castillo likely thought he would never be caught. But our team never stopped pursuing justice for Sandy.”

Community and Official Reactions

While nothing can undo the tragedy, Castillo’s arrest offers some measure of closure for Ly Le’s family. Congressman Pat Harrigan of North Carolina’s 10th District praised the capture on X, stating:

“Nearly nine years after a Charlotte murder, the person responsible is finally in custody. Thanks to FBI Charlotte, CMPD, and federal partners for their relentless dedication to bringing justice home.”

The arrest emphasizes the importance of persistence, international cooperation, and the long-term commitment required to solve serious crimes. Families affected by violent acts often endure years of uncertainty, and the capture of fugitives like Castillo provides accountability and closure.
