Angelyne became an icon of Los Angeles in the 1980s by appearing on billboards all over the city—always in pink, always striking, and always mysterious. Dubbed the “Billboard Queen,” she didn’t promote products or services; she marketed one thing only: herself.
Her rise to fame began in February 1984, when a single billboard on Sunset Boulevard introduced a blonde, pouty figure staring out at passersby.
From there, Angelyne’s image spread across Los Angeles, and she became a local legend. Over the years, she claimed various stories about her past, including being from Idaho, having been orphaned, and drawing inspiration from Marilyn Monroe.
