U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar was targeted during a public town hall event in Minneapolis earlier this week when an individual sprayed her with an unidentified liquid — an incident that has once again raised serious concerns about the safety of elected officials.
As investigators continue their work, new details about the suspect’s background are emerging, and they are drawing significant attention.
Incident at Minneapolis Town Hall
The 41-year-old Minnesota congresswoman was addressing constituents on immigration policy, including criticism of recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions, when the disruption occurred.
According to law enforcement, a man approached the stage from the audience and discharged liquid from a large syringe toward Rep. Omar’s upper body. Security personnel reacted immediately, restraining the suspect within seconds and escorting him from the venue.
The individual was later identified as Anthony Kazmierczak, a 55-year-old man who was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of third-degree assault. Authorities confirmed he remains detained while the investigation continues, and additional charges are being considered.
Criminal Record and Online Activity
A preliminary background review shows that Kazmierczak has a prior criminal history. Records indicate a felony auto theft conviction dating back to 1989, along with multiple DUI arrests, repeated traffic violations, and documented financial troubles, including two bankruptcy filings.
Investigators also reviewed his online presence, which reportedly includes political commentary supportive of former President Donald Trump and critical of Democratic leaders, including former President Joe Biden. Some posts referenced controversial views on race, history, and U.S. politics.

Witnesses at the event reported a sharp, vinegar-like smell following the incident, prompting concern that the substance could be hazardous. As a precaution, emergency responders called in a hazardous materials team.
