NBC Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie is facing a deeply personal crisis as authorities continue searching for her mother, Nancy Guthrie, who has been reported missing from her home in Arizona.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen on Saturday, January 31, in the Catalina Foothills area. According to reports, her most recent activity on social media occurred several days earlier, with her final Facebook post dated January 27. Since then, family members and law enforcement have been unable to locate her.
Due to the unfolding situation, Savannah Guthrie did not appear on Today during Monday’s broadcast. The news of her mother’s disappearance was addressed early in the show, only hours after the case became public.
“We want to begin with a very personal and difficult story for our team,” Today anchor Craig Melvin told viewers. “Nancy Guthrie, Savannah’s beloved mother, has been reported missing in Arizona.”
Authorities Expand Investigation
During a press briefing held on Sunday, February 1, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos shared new details about the ongoing missing person investigation. He confirmed that extensive search efforts are underway, including both ground crews and aerial units.
Sheriff Nanos also revealed that the department’s homicide detectives have been brought in to assist, a step taken due to the concerning circumstances surrounding the case.
“We are using every resource available,” Nanos said. He emphasized that Nancy Guthrie’s age and health have raised serious concerns. “She is 84 years old and not in good physical condition, which naturally heightens the urgency. This is an extremely concerning situation.”
The sheriff added that it is unusual for such a high level of involvement early in an investigation, but explained that conditions at the home prompted a more intensive response. Detectives continue to process the scene while search efforts remain active.
Savannah Guthrie Releases Statement
After remaining silent since the news broke, Savannah Guthrie has now shared a statement through the Today show.
“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of thoughts, prayers, and messages of support,” she said. “Our focus right now is on the safe return of our dear mom. We are deeply grateful to law enforcement for their tireless work, and we encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.”
