Drivers across Illinois will soon see significant changes to license renewal rules for older adults, as a new law aims to strike a balance between road safety and fairness.
Beginning July 1, 2026, new requirements under House Bill 1226 Illinois will apply to drivers age 79 and older. The updated rules require in-person license renewals and a mandatory vision test, while easing previous restrictions that many seniors considered overly strict.
Under the new law, drivers in this age group will no longer be required to take a road test at every renewal. Instead, mandatory driving tests will only begin at age 87. Written tests may still be required for those with recent traffic violations or concerning driving records.
