Bulldogs and Other Flat-Faced Breeds
Dr. Anwary says he has a soft spot for brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds—but he wouldn’t own one due to their health complications.
These dogs often struggle with breathing, temperature regulation, and exercise tolerance because of their facial structure. Limited activity can lead to weight gain, which further worsens respiratory and heat-related issues, creating a difficult cycle that impacts overall quality of life.
Doberman Pinscher
Dobermans are loyal, intelligent, and highly trainable, but the breed is at high risk for a serious heart condition known as dilated cardiomyopathy.
This disease affects the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively and often requires regular screenings and long-term treatment. Dr. Anwary notes that the emotional and financial commitment can be significant for owners.
Great Dane
While Dr. Anwary has owned mixed-breed dogs with Great Dane lineage, he points out that purebred Great Danes tend to have a much shorter lifespan compared to other breeds.
With an average life expectancy of just seven to eight years, prospective owners should be prepared for the emotional impact of losing a companion relatively early, despite their gentle and loving personalities.
