Scientists are not lining up cockroaches and milking them into bottles. The substance comes from <em>Diploptera punctata<\/em>, also known as the Pacific beetle cockroach, a species that gives birth to live young. While the embryos develop, they receive a rich secretion from the mother\u2019s brood sac.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the embryos, proteins from that secretion become concentrated into tiny crystals. Those crystals act like a stored food source, releasing nutrients gradually as the developing insects need them.<\/p>\n<h2>What Cockroach Milk Actually Is<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the nickname, this is not milk in the dairy sense. These crystals offer scientists a rare example of nutrient storage and controlled release inside a living organism.
