At first, I didn’t think twice about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There, on the bathroom floor, was something small, dark, and oddly shaped. From a distance, it looked like a scrap of rubber, a piece of packaging, or some forgotten bit of debris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nothing unusual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At least, that’s what I told myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The object was sitting just outside the strongest pool of ceiling light, making it difficult to see clearly. I took another look\u2014and suddenly something about it seemed wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It wasn’t flat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It looked thick, uneven, and strangely organic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I stood there for a moment, trying to convince myself that my imagination was getting the better of me. Bathrooms are full of small pieces of debris. Something could easily have fallen from a cabinet, cleaning product, or piece of packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the longer I looked, the less convinced I became.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if that isn’t trash?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I stepped closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The room seemed strangely quiet as I examined the floor. I checked around the toilet, underneath the sink, near the shower, and along the walls. Nothing appeared out of place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That somehow made the object even more disturbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then I wondered whether it had moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I immediately dismissed the thought. Surely I had simply looked at it differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So I watched it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For several seconds, nothing happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then it moved again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This time, there was no convincing myself otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I stepped back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Whatever was lying on the bathroom floor wasn’t an ordinary piece of household debris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now the question was much more unsettling:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What was it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I didn’t want to touch it, and I certainly didn’t want to find out by getting any closer. Instead, I began searching for information, comparing descriptions and images of small creatures that can live in damp environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And then the shape started to look familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It appeared to resemble a leech<\/strong>\u2014a soft-bodied, blood-feeding creature more commonly associated with freshwater environments than the average household bathroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That realization immediately raised even more questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How could something like that have ended up there?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Had it been accidentally carried indoors? Could it have entered through an opening or drain?
