Celebrity The world of British comedy is mourning the loss of one of its brightest stars. Prunella Scales — the beloved actress who brought to life the unforgettable Sybil Fawlty in the iconic sitcom Fawlty Towers — has passed away at the age of 93.
Her family confirmed that she died peacefully at her home in London, surrounded by loved ones. “Our darling mother Prunella Scales died peacefully at home in London yesterday,” her sons, Samuel and Joseph, shared in a statement. “Although dementia forced her retirement from a remarkable acting career of nearly 70 years, she continued to live at home.”
According to her family, Scales had even been watching Fawlty Towers the day before she passed — a touching reminder of the role that made her a national treasure.
Scales became one of Britain’s most adored comic talents during a career that spanned nearly seven decades. She first gained attention in the 1960s BBC sitcom The Marriage Lines, but her portrayal of Sybil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers cemented her place in television history.
Opposite John Cleese’s frantic hotel manager Basil, Scales’ Sybil was sharp, confident, and endlessly witty — the perfect foil to Basil’s chaos. Her unforgettable shouts of “BASIL!” and cutting one-liners became part of British pop culture.
Reflecting on the show years later, Scales once said, “I feel very grateful for Sybil. Fawlty Towers was hard work but deeply rewarding.”

Though Fawlty Towers made her a household name, Scales’ talents stretched far beyond comedy. She earned a BAFTA nomination for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in A Question of Attribution (1991), proving her range as both a comic and dramatic actress.
