Fire at Chinachem Tower Declared Structurally Safe After Scaffolding Blaze Injures Four

A significant fire broke out at Chinachem Tower in Hong Kong’s Central district on Saturday, October 18, 2025, prompting a large emergency response and the evacuation of nearby buildings. Authorities have since confirmed that the structure remains safe, with no major damage found.

Fire Breaks Out on Exterior Scaffolding

According to officials, the fire began at approximately 4:24 p.m. along Connaught Road Central. Flames quickly spread across the bamboo scaffolding surrounding the exterior of the building, producing heavy smoke visible across the busy commercial area.

Witnesses reported seeing flames moving rapidly upward along the scaffolding, while small pieces of debris fell onto the street below. Emergency services were dispatched immediately, and occupants inside the building were evacuated as a precaution.

Firefighters worked for several hours to contain the blaze and successfully brought it under control at around 9:13 p.m., according to the Fire Services Department.

Injuries and Safety Assessment

Four people were taken to hospital for treatment following the incident. Authorities reported that two individuals were listed in serious condition, while the remaining two sustained less severe injuries.

Following an inspection, the Buildings Department confirmed that Chinachem Tower did not suffer structural damage and remains safe for use. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

Traffic and Public Impact

The fire caused temporary road closures and traffic disruptions in Central as emergency crews secured the area. Normal operations gradually resumed after the fire was extinguished and safety checks were completed.

Officials have reminded contractors and property managers to follow strict safety procedures when working with exterior scaffolding to reduce fire risks.
