Authorities in Australia are investigating a serious mid-air collision involving two sightseeing helicopters near Sea World on the Gold Coast. The incident resulted in four fatalities and several others being injured.
A newly surfaced video recorded by a passenger on one of the helicopters captured the moments leading up to the collision. The short clip shows the aircraft flying over the coastline when a passenger notices another helicopter approaching. The individual can be seen trying to get the pilot’s attention, pointing outside and gently tapping the pilot’s shoulder to alert him.
Seconds later, the two helicopters made contact. The video becomes unsteady as the cabin fills with broken glass and passengers react to the sudden impact.
Despite the severe situation, the pilot of the recording aircraft was able to make an emergency landing on a nearby sandbank. Those on board sustained minor injuries, thanks to the pilot’s quick actions.
Australian aviation authorities have launched a full investigation to understand what led to the collision and to help prevent similar incidents in the future. Officials have expressed condolences to the families affected and praised the emergency responders who acted swiftly at the scene.
