“Jack?” she said gently, patting the chair beside her. “Come sit. Look at them… we did it.”

But Jack wouldn’t move. “They’re beautiful,” he murmured, still not meeting her eyes.

Emily’s heart pounded. “Jack, what is it? You’re scaring me.”

And then he said it: “Emily… I don’t think we can keep them.”

She froze. “What do you mean? They’re our daughters!”

He hesitated, then whispered, “My mother saw a fortune teller. She said the girls would bring misfortune… that they’d kill me.”

Emily was stunned. “You’re leaving your family over a fortune teller’s warning?”

Jack looked haunted. “She’s never been wrong before.”

Fury and disbelief surged through Emily. “If you walk away now, don’t expect to walk back into their lives later.”

He didn’t answer. He turned and left.

Alone, heartbroken, and holding three newborns, Emily made a quiet promise: I’m here. I’ll always be here.
