My mom had gone into labor weeks too early, and nothing about that day had gone the way we expected.

One moment, we were rushing to the hospital, reassuring ourselves that everything would be okay.

The next, doctors surrounded her bed, speaking quietly and exchanging worried looks.

I remember holding her hand while she tried to smile through the pain.

She kept telling us she would be okay.

But even then, we could see how serious things had become.

A Birth Without Celebration

When my baby sibling was finally born, there was no celebration.
