When Ally first saw the makeup on her six-month-old niece’s leg, she thought it was strange.
Then she looked closer.
Beneath the beige cosmetic covering was a bruise.
Paige wasn’t simply crying.
She was protecting one leg and refusing to let anyone move it.
Within hours, Ally would be sitting inside a hospital, answering questions from investigators and doctors while wondering how her tiny niece had been injured.
But the most disturbing discovery was still ahead.
Because Paige’s latest injury wasn’t the only one.
And the person who seemed most desperate to hide the truth wasn’t the person Ally initially suspected.
“I Didn’t Hurt Her”
The investigator sat across from Ally in the hospital hallway.
“Did you apply the makeup?”
“No.”
“Did you remove it?”
“I used one baby wipe.”
“Why?”
“Because I needed to see what was underneath.”
Ally’s voice shook.
“My sister brought Paige to me. She said the baby had been teething. She handed me the diaper bag and left.”
According to Ally, Paige began crying shortly afterward.
She wouldn’t allow her aunt to move one leg.
That’s when Ally noticed the makeup.
She carefully removed a small area.
What she found underneath frightened her.
The investigator listened closely.
Then she said something that made Ally’s stomach tighten.
“Your sister says the makeup was already gone when you called her.”
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“It doesn’t match your account.”
Ally looked through the hospital window.
Paige was inside receiving medical care.
She was only six months old.
And Ally had no idea how badly she was hurt.
The Hospital Reveals a Bigger Problem
A short time later, a nurse brought an evidence bag containing the baby wipe Ally had used.
Ally stared at it.
“You kept that?”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t hurt her.”
The investigator remained calm.
“We have to examine every possibility.”
Then a doctor arrived.
Paige had suffered a fracture.
The news left Ally stunned.
“A fracture?”
“Yes.”
The doctors were still determining when the injury occurred and whether there were signs of previous trauma.
That distinction would become crucial.
Because imaging revealed something else.
Paige had an additional injury that appeared to be older and already healing.
Ally could barely process what she was hearing.
“There was an older fracture?”
The investigator nodded.
“That changes the scope of the investigation.”
