US Politics In a move that caught the public off guard, Fox News host, veteran, and father of seven Pete Hegseth announced he is donating his entire $12.9 million annual bonus and sponsorship earnings to launch a network of housing and rehabilitation centers for Minnesota’s homeless.
Standing at a simple podium in downtown Minneapolis, Hegseth told reporters, “This city made me who I am. No one should freeze to death on the same streets where I learned to walk to school. If success means anything, it’s having the power to make someone else’s life better.”
Operation Homefront Minnesota aims to build 150 permanent housing units and 300 emergency shelter beds across the state, offering more than just a roof — each center will include mental health services, addiction recovery programs, veteran outreach, and job placement training. “We don’t need another temporary fix,” Hegseth said. “We need a path out — and it starts with stability, dignity, and a door that doesn’t close at sunrise.”
A Personal Mission
Hegseth’s drive stems from his own experiences growing up in Minneapolis, where he often saw people struggling on the streets during harsh winters. A 2023 encounter with a former Army medic who ended up homeless after PTSD and opioid addiction cemented his commitment. “He looked me in the eye and said, ‘Who serves the ones who came back broken?’ That’s the question that haunted me,” Hegseth said.
Bridging Divides
Though often known for his conservative stances, Hegseth’s announcement earned praise across the political spectrum. Community organizer Maya Peterson called it “a rare bridge between conviction and compassion… leadership in its purest form — using influence to solve a human problem.” Minneapolis officials confirmed planning has already begun for two initial facilities, with full completion expected in late 2026.
