Powerful Tornadoes Hit North Dakota, Causing Widespread Damage

On June 20, 2025, southeastern North Dakota experienced a severe weather outbreak that produced multiple tornadoes, leaving significant damage across several communities. Towns including Enderlin, Lisbon, and Valley City were among the hardest hit as fast-moving storms swept through residential areas, farmland, and infrastructure.

According to preliminary reports from the National Weather Service (NWS), at least one tornado may have reached EF3 intensity, with winds capable of damaging homes, uprooting trees, and destroying outbuildings. Survey teams are continuing to assess the full scope of the damage.

Impact on Communities

Enderlin was particularly affected, with local officials confirming fatalities and injuries among residents. Power lines were downed, hundreds of trees uprooted, and multiple homes were destroyed. Nearby towns also reported property damage, including overturned vehicles and damaged farm structures.

Residents described the experience as both frightening and humbling. “Everything we built is gone, but we’re grateful to be alive,” said one resident. Emergency responders worked through the night to clear debris and assist those affected.

Storm Footage and Analysis

Veteran storm chaser Stephen Jones, known online as @TornadoSteejo, captured video footage of several tornadoes during the outbreak. His footage shows rotating funnels and flying debris, providing a dramatic view of the storms’ intensity. Meteorologists have used this footage to help analyze the tornadoes’ paths and understand their strength.

NWS teams in Grand Forks and Bismarck are conducting surveys to determine the final intensity of the tornadoes. Early estimates indicate that at least one tornado reached EF3, with winds likely exceeding 135 miles per hour (217 km/h). Officials emphasized the importance of following weather alerts and having a safety plan in place during severe storms.

Preparedness and Recovery

North Dakota is part of the Great Plains region, also known as Tornado Alley, which experiences frequent severe weather during the summer months. Meteorologists urge residents to remain alert as conditions remain favorable for additional storms. Key safety measures include having a NOAA Weather Radio, identifying the safest shelter in your home, and monitoring official weather alerts.

State and local agencies are coordinating relief efforts, including restoring power, providing temporary shelter, and supporting affected families. Nonprofit organizations have also begun offering assistance, including food and emotional support.

Moving Forward

As communities begin cleanup and recovery, this event serves as a reminder of the importance of storm preparedness and resilience. While technology allows for earlier warnings, tornadoes can strike quickly, making planning and vigilance essential for safety.
