The fatal incident occurred Wednesday morning when Good, inside her SUV, reportedly reversed and attempted to drive away from ICE agents. Federal authorities say the agent fired in self-defense, describing the shots as “defensive” to protect officers and the public. According to DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin, the agent acted after fearing for his life and the lives of colleagues.

Local authorities, however, have disputed this account. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said Good was in her vehicle blocking the road when federal agents approached, and she began to drive off. Only two shots were fired before her vehicle crashed into a pole and damaged two parked cars.

Witnesses told reporters that a doctor on scene attempted to assist Good after she was shot, but ICE agents initially blocked access. Ambulance access was reportedly delayed by ICE vehicles occupying the street. Video footage captured distraught family members at the scene, including a partner describing Good’s six-year-old child, highlighting the devastating personal toll of the shooting.
Good’s mother, Donna Ganger, described her daughter as terrified in her final moments and emphatically denied claims that Good had been involved in any protest activity prior to the shooting. Good was a poet and devoted mother who grew up in Colorado Springs and lived in Minneapolis with her partner. She had previously been married to comedian Timothy Macklin, who passed away in 2023.

The shooting has prompted strong statements from city and state leaders. Mayor Jacob Frey demanded ICE leave Minneapolis immediately, while Governor Tim Walz condemned the federal account of events as “propaganda” and threatened National Guard deployment to protect local communities.
The White House, in contrast, praised ICE officers, calling them “brave men and women” who risk their lives to protect communities. The incident has reignited national debates over immigration enforcement, use-of-force policies, and community safety in urban areas.
Legal experts note that burning the American flag—a protest seen during demonstrations—is protected symbolic speech under Supreme Court rulings, highlighting the complex mix of civil liberties and public safety at play.
The investigation into Good’s death continues, with authorities promising a thorough review of evidence, video footage, and witness statements. Meanwhile, Minneapolis remains a city grappling with grief, anger, and calls for accountability.
