Puffed-Up Ground Beef Packaging: Is It Safe to Eat or Should You Throw It Away?

A package of ground beef that suddenly looks like a balloon can raise an important food safety question. If the meat was purchased yesterday, refrigerated promptly, and is still within its use-by date, is it safe to cook—or is it better to throw it away?

A photo of a tray of ground beef with visibly swollen plastic packaging has sparked a familiar household debate: one person believes the meat is fine because the date is still good, while the other thinks the unusual packaging is a warning sign.

So, who’s right?

Why Would Ground Beef Packaging Puff Up?

Some meat packaging contains gases that help preserve the product and maintain its appearance. However, packaging that becomes unexpectedly swollen can sometimes indicate gas production from microbial activity, a damaged package, or another problem with the packaging process.

The appearance alone cannot tell you exactly what caused the swelling, but unexpectedly ballooned packaging is a reason to be cautious, particularly with highly perishable foods such as ground beef.
