Over time, Davies and Hodgson’s paths diverged. Hodgson left the band in 1983, pursuing family life and spiritual interests in Northern California, while Davies stayed rooted in Los Angeles, leading Supertramp through new lineups and continuing to record and perform. Even as health issues emerged, including the cancellation of a planned 2015 tour due to his cancer diagnosis, Davies remained devoted to music.
In a rare interview in August 2018, Davies shared that he had largely overcome his health challenges and was once again enjoying music, performing with local bands as Ricky and the Rockets. Beyond the stage, he was celebrated for his warmth, resilience, and deep devotion to his wife, Sue, with whom he shared more than five decades of life.
Fans will remember his unmistakable voice on classics like “Bloody Well Right,” “From Now On,” and “Goodbye Stranger,” as well as the iconic melodies he co-wrote with Hodgson. Supertramp’s official social media paid tribute, stating: “As co-writer, along with partner Roger Hodgson, he was the voice and pianist behind Supertramp’s most iconic songs, leaving an indelible mark on rock music history. His soulful vocals and unmistakable touch on the Wurlitzer became the heartbeat of the band’s sound.”
Rick Davies’s music remains a gift to fans across generations, a testament to his talent, dedication, and love for the art. His songs continue to inspire and bring joy, ensuring his legacy will endure.
Thank you, Rick, for the unforgettable music and memories. Celebrate his life by sharing your favorite Supertramp song and keeping his spirit alive through the music that touched us all.
