More People Are Identifying as Demisexual — Here’s Why

Keeping up with the ever-growing glossary of words describing sexuality and attraction can feel like a full-time job. Terms like “Graysexual,” “Abrosexual,” and “Almondsexual” have become increasingly common, leaving many of us scratching our heads or Googling just to keep up. The truth is, human sexuality is evolving, and people are finding more ways to describe the nuances of their experiences. It’s not about confusion — it’s about representation, and it’s opening conversations that simply didn’t exist before.

One term that has gained attention recently is “Demisexual.” Unlike some of the newer, less familiar labels, demisexuality has made its way into mainstream conversation. In 2024, British singer Tulisa Contostavlos revealed during her appearance on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! that she identifies as demisexual. Her candid discussion helped bring awareness to a sexual orientation that is often misunderstood or overlooked.

So, what exactly does it mean to be demisexual? In simple terms, demisexual people experience sexual attraction only after forming a strong emotional bond with someone. It’s not about surface-level attraction, physical appearance, scent, or voice — it’s about connection, trust, and emotional intimacy. Tulisa explained it best: “For me, it’s all about the connection and the emotions that I feel with someone and then wanting to express them in that way. I need actual depth… I’m a slow, slow burner.”
