Why Donald Trump Closed the Kennedy Center Following Controversial Name Change

The iconic John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, long a symbol of American culture and tribute to the late president, is facing a major shake-up. Named for John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated nearly a decade before its 1971 opening, the center has long been a hub for music, theater, and diplomacy. But on February 1, current President Donald Trump dropped a bombshell: the Kennedy Center will close for an extended renovation starting July 4, 2026, coinciding with the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations.

The announcement follows earlier proposals by House Republicans to rename the venue the “First Lady Melania Trump Opera House,” a move that drew strong backlash from both the Kennedy family and arts advocates. In response, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the landmark would instead be called the “Trump-Kennedy Center.”
