On a seemingly ordinary summer morning in 2016, Michael Biadasz set out to do a task he had done countless times on his family farm in Amherst, Wisconsin. What should have been just another workday turned into a heartbreaking tragedy.
An Invisible Danger
On August 15, 2016, Mike, a passionate young beef farmer, snapped a playful photo for Snapchat, calling out the “liquid gold” he was about to mix in the manure pit—a routine task he had performed safely for years. But that morning, the air held a deadly secret.
As Mike stirred the manure, a rare weather phenomenon trapped lethal gases—likely methane or hydrogen sulfide—close to the ground. A layer of warm air high above, combined with morning fog, prevented the gases from dispersing. Within moments, the invisible poison overtook him. By the time coworkers arrived, Mike and 16 of his cows had lost their lives.
Steve Burclaw, a friend and fellow worker, recalled the shock:
“There was really no sign of anything being different or wrong… just another foggy morning.”
But nothing about that morning was ordinary.
