Tennessee Moves Forward With Rare Female Death Row Case

Tennessee may soon carry out a rare execution involving a female inmate after the state Supreme Court approved the continuation of Christa Gail Pike’s death sentence. Now 49, Pike is the only woman currently on Tennessee’s death row.

The case dates back to 1995, when Pike was 18 and enrolled in a Job Corps program near Knoxville. The incident, which drew significant attention at the time, involved another student, Colleen Slemmer. According to court records, tensions arose between Pike and Slemmer over personal conflicts, ultimately leading to a violent encounter.
