Just above the metal latch plate on almost every seat belt, there’s a small round plastic button. It’s easy to overlook. Some might even think it’s decorative.

In reality, it’s a stopper, and it has a very practical job: keeping the latch plate from sliding down to the floor when the belt isn’t in use.

Without it, the metal tongue would fall toward the lowest point of the belt—often right by the floor.
