The phone buzzed softly on the kitchen counter while I was scraping dried peanut butter off a plate.
It was one of those rare quiet moments after bedtime chaos—when all six of my kids were finally asleep and the house felt still again. I had just survived the nightly routine: last-minute water requests, a missing sock emergency, and my youngest asking the same question she always asks before closing her eyes.
“Mom… you’ll be here in the morning, right?”
“Always,” I told her.

“Cole,” I said quietly.
He glanced at the phone in my hand but didn’t seem worried. He poured himself a glass of orange juice.
“What is this?” I asked.
“My phone, Paige,” he replied calmly. “Sorry I left it out.”
“I saw the message.”
He leaned against the counter.
“Yeah,” he said. “I’ve been meaning to tell you.”
My stomach tightened.
“Tell me what?”
“That I’m with Alyssa now.”
