It’s not just the U.S. that faces rising concern. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has suggested that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could already mark the start of a wider global confrontation. Public perception echoes this fear: a YouGov survey across the U.S. and Europe found that 41–55% of respondents believe another world war could erupt within the next decade—and most expect nuclear weapons to play a role.

Experts highlight that geography matters. Regions near key military installations, like missile silos, could be high-risk targets. Central states such as Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota sit close to these strategic sites, making them more vulnerable in a worst-case nuclear scenario.
