Lucas and Élodie had dreamed of a family for years, but after several miscarriages and health setbacks, they turned to adoption. Their hearts were full of hope—and soon, that hope became real when Émilie, a bright and affectionate 4-year-old, entered their lives. From the moment she saw Lucas, she threw herself into his arms, as if she had found her real father.

The connection was instant. The social worker asked them, “Are you really ready?” Élodie’s confident reply was simple: “She is our daughter.” And for a time, life felt complete. Laughter, games, bedtime stories—the family was whole.

But challenges arose sooner than expected. One evening, Lucas returned home exhausted, eager to see Émilie. She ran to him in tears, clutching his hand: “I want to stay here, Daddy.” Confused, he looked up to see Élodie’s face, tense and stern. “We have to give her back,” she said.

Émilie’s innocent mischief—soiled clothes, a little paint on a dress—had triggered fear in Élodie. She couldn’t see the child’s heart, only a disruption to her routine. Lucas was stunned. He had grown deeply attached to Émilie and couldn’t imagine letting her go. “Either her or me,” Élodie said.

Lucas made the choice. He stayed with his daughter, prioritizing her happiness and well-being. Élodie left, slamming the door, and the days that followed were difficult. Émilie didn’t understand why her mother had disappeared. Lucas comforted her, holding her close, whispering reassurance, and creating a safe, loving space.
